Important: DStv restructured all its packages on 17 September 2026. If you are reading an article that mentions Compact, Compact Plus, Family, or Access, that article is out of date. The new lineup has five packages with new names and different channel groupings. This guide covers the current packages.

What Changed in the September 2026 Restructure
DStv replaced the old five-tier system (Access, Family, Compact, Compact Plus, Premium) with a new five-tier system that groups content differently. The biggest changes:
- Sports and movies are now separate packages. Previously you had to buy Compact Plus or Premium to get good sport. Now you can get all SuperSport channels for R399 without paying for movie channels you do not watch.
- Premium is cheaper. Down from R829 to R799. It remains the only package with both full sport and full movies.
- The entry point is cheaper. Starter at R99 replaces Access at R135.
- Compact and Compact Plus are gone. If you were on Compact (R469), your closest equivalent is Select (R299) or Sports (R399) depending on what you watched.
- Family is gone. Select (R299) covers the family content that Family (R349) had, at a lower price.
Detailed Package Breakdown
DStv Premium: R799/month
Everything DStv offers. All SuperSport channels for live EPL, rugby, cricket and every major sporting event. All movie channels including M-Net Movies, Showmax included. Full entertainment, documentaries, kids, news and international content.
Who should get it: Households where some people watch sport and others watch movies or series. Premium is the only package where you do not have to choose. The R799 price point is R100 less than the old Premium (R829), which makes it slightly better value than before.
Worth it if: At least two people in your home regularly watch different content types. One Premium subscription is cheaper than one Sports (R399) plus one Movies and Series (R500) separately (R899).
DStv Movies and Series: R500/month
The full movie and series library without live sport. M-Net, M-Net Movies, HBO content, Universal TV, Sony channels, entertainment channels, documentaries, kids and news. This is the old Compact Plus minus the SuperSport channels, plus a better movie selection.
Who should get it: Anyone who watches series and movies but does not care about live sport. If you were on Compact Plus (R569) mainly for entertainment, this saves you R69/month with arguably better movie content.
Missing: All SuperSport channels. You get free-to-air sport only.
DStv Sports: R399/month
All SuperSport channels with basic entertainment and news. This is the package DStv fans have wanted for years: live EPL, rugby, cricket, Formula 1, UFC and everything else SuperSport carries, without paying for movie channels you never watch.
Who should get it: Sport fans. If you were on Compact Plus (R569) mainly for SuperSport, this saves you R170/month. If you were on Premium (R829) only for sport, this saves you R430/month.
Missing: M-Net Movies, HBO content, premium entertainment channels. You get basic entertainment and news alongside the sport.
DStv Select: R299/month
Local entertainment, kids channels, news, lifestyle and selected international content. This replaces both the old Family (R349) and fills the gap left by Compact. Includes 1Magic, Mzansi Magic, all local channels, Cartoon Network, Disney Junior, eNCA, and lifestyle channels.
Who should get it: Families with children, people who mainly watch local content and series, anyone who had Family and wants similar content for R50 less.
Missing: SuperSport, M-Net Movies, premium international channels.
DStv Starter: R99/month
All free-to-air channels (SABC 1, 2, 3, eTV) plus basic extras. A step up from antenna-only TV. Music channels, basic news, limited kids content.
Who should get it: Budget-conscious viewers who want reliable reception (satellite does not depend on antenna signal quality) and a few channels beyond free-to-air. At R99, it is R36 less than the old Access package.
Missing: Most entertainment, all sport, all movies. This is genuinely basic TV.
How to Choose the Right Package
Start with what you actually watch
The new structure makes this simpler than before:
- Watch live sport? You need Sports (R399) or Premium (R799). Nothing else has SuperSport.
- Watch movies and series but not sport? Movies and Series (R500) is your package.
- Watch both sport and movies? Premium (R799) is cheaper than buying Sports + Movies and Series separately.
- Mainly local content, kids, news? Select (R299) covers it.
- Just want something on? Starter (R99) keeps the TV running.

Extra View with the New Packages
Extra View still works the same way: R100/month extra to watch your subscription on a second decoder in another room. Both decoders share the same package, so you can watch different channels simultaneously.
One Premium subscription (R799) + Extra View (R100) = R899/month for two TVs. That is cheaper than two separate subscriptions of any package above Starter.
Money-Saving Tips
- Separate sport from entertainment. The biggest saving from the restructure: if you were on Compact Plus (R569) or Premium (R829) mainly for one type of content, you can now pay for just what you watch.
- Upgrade for events, downgrade after. DStv allows one downgrade per billing cycle. Upgrade to Sports or Premium for the EPL season or a major tournament, then downgrade when it is over.
- Use DStv Rewards. Loyalty discounts, free months and temporary upgrades are available through the DStv app.
- Consider DStv Stream. If you have fast, reliable internet, DStv Stream packages are sometimes cheaper and do not require dish installation.
Installation for All Packages
Every DStv package uses the same satellite equipment: a 90cm dish, LNB and decoder. The package you choose does not affect the installation. Whether you pick Starter at R99 or Premium at R799, the installation process and cost are the same.
