Gate Motor Prices in South Africa (2026): Hardware, Installation and Running Costs
Gate motor pricing confuses people because the number you see in a hardware store is never the number you actually pay. The motor is one cost; getting it installed properly, keeping it alive through load-shedding, and fixing it when a surge takes out the board are the rest of the story. Here are the honest 2026 numbers.
The short answer: domestic sliding gate motors cost R3,500–R7,000 for the unit; swing-gate kits run R6,000–R12,000; installation labour alone is R1,000–R2,500; and complete supply-and-install packages start from around R4,500 — which is where our own installations begin, safety beams included in the quote.
Hardware: what the motor itself costs
| Type | Typical 2026 price (unit only) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding motor, 300kg-rated | R3,500 – R5,000 | Standard domestic driveway gates |
| Sliding motor, 500kg-rated | R4,500 – R7,000 | Heavier steel gates, high daily cycles |
| Swing-gate kit (double leaf) | R6,000 – R12,000 | Wooden pairs and farm-style entrances |
| Industrial / high-cycle | R8,000+ | Complexes and business premises |
Rating matters more than brand marketing: an under-rated motor dragging a heavy gate dies young. Weigh (or let your installer weigh) the gate before anyone quotes you a model.
Installation: the part the shelf price hides
Fitting a gate motor properly involves mounting the unit on a solid base plate, aligning and often replacing the gate rack, setting travel limits, wiring power (sometimes trenching to reach it), fitting safety beams and programming remotes. As labour only, that's typically R1,000–R2,500 on a standard sliding gate. Complete supply-and-install packages — motor, materials and labour together — start from around R4,500 and are usually better value than buying the motor yourself, because the installer warranties the whole system rather than blaming your motor purchase.
The load-shedding line items
- Battery replacement: R350–R900 fitted. Load-shedding cycles batteries hard; 18 months to 3 years is the realistic 2026 lifespan, not the 5 years of the old days.
- Solar charging: R1,500–R3,500 fitted. A panel plus charge controller keeps the battery topped up off-grid — worth it for most gates that get sun, and the reason "solar gate motor" is one of the fastest-growing requests we get.
- Surge damage: R800–R2,500. The switching spikes when power returns are what kill control boards. A surge protector on the gate circuit costs a fraction of the board it saves.
Common repair costs
| Repair | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Battery replacement | R350 – R900 |
| Extra/replacement remote, coded | R150 – R400 |
| Rack repair/realignment | from R500 |
| Control board replacement | R800 – R2,500 |
| Call-out + diagnosis | R450 – R700 (often credited to the repair) |
Repair-first is the honest rule: most "dead" gates are a battery, a remote or an alignment issue — not a new motor. Be suspicious of anyone who quotes a full replacement before testing the basics.
Getting the most from your quote
- Ask for the exact motor model and its weight rating — and check it against your gate's actual weight.
- Confirm safety beams are included; they stop the gate hitting cars, pets and children, and shouldn't be an optional extra.
- Ask what the battery spec is and whether the quote includes surge protection.
- Check the workmanship guarantee — ours is 12 months.
